RSVP Vacations provided SB Pride's Grand Prize Vacation Package!

Allena from Ventura won a $1,798.00 Club RSVP vacation package in the 2002 Santa Barbara Pride raffle. George Thurlow, Publisher of one of our major supporters, the Santa Barbara Independent, was nice enough to oversee the drawing. Allena's winning ticket meant that she could enjoy the sun and fun with one of her friends in Cancùn Mexico for a 7-day vacation at Club Med Village. Congratulations Allena and thanks for supporting SB Pride 2002!

Both women and men can enjoy fabulous family fun with RSVP Vacations all over the world and help support the Santa Barbara Pride Festival throughOUT the year in the process...and you don't even need to live in Santa Barbara! As one of our major sponsors, RSVP Vacations has generously offered to increase their sponsorship of our efforts for every cruise or land package you and your friends book so please - pass this on if you know someone who's thinking of taking a great vacation! The process is simple and you can book it yourself right over the web.

To learn more, simply click through the RSVP Vacations icon at http://www.GaySantaBarbara.org. However, for your support to be properly credited, be sure to click through GSB's page, thank them for their sponsorship of Santa Barbara Pride and please let us know so we can keep track of our efforts.

5. The Gay Café

Team GSB earned thousands of dollars to help produce our cultural events and educational programs by selling coffee, iced blended mochas and strawberry pound cakes at local festivals last year including:

  • Summer Solstice
  • San Luis Obispo Pride
  • Old Spanish Days
  • Ventura Pride
  • Labor Day @ Carpinteria Beach
  • Book & Author Faire
  • Multi-Cultural Festival
  • Santa Barbara Pride

In the process we made new friends and our volunteers had a blast. Be sure to visit the Gay Café in 2003 at these events and quite a few new ones. See photos of SB Pride and the crew serving up mochas at http://www.GaySantaBarbara.org/press.htm.

"Would you like that with whipped cream?"

6. OUTreach and Community Building Efforts

CAPI and the World InterPride Conferences - GSB volunteers joined our colleagues from around the world at events in Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco and Palm Springs to learn more about the Global LGBT Pride Movement and help produce even better events at home.

Santa Barbara Jewish Festival - GSB once again joined the SB Jewish Federation for their annual Festival in Oak Park.

Santa Barbara City College - This is the 2nd year GSB has participated in SBCC's Non-Profit Day, providing volunteer opportunities for local students at our community events.

National Coming OUT Day - Santa Barbara's Mayor Marty Blum kicked off the weekend by presenting GSB Board members and volunteers with the city's official proclamation. If that weren't enough to show her support, she opened City Hall the morning of Pride to help hang the GSB flag from the balcony! See the photos at http://www.GaySantaBarbara.org/press.htm.

Get OUT the Vote! - GSB teamed up with the US Postal Service in a groundbreaking effort to register LGBT voters and our allies at SB Pride. We had the first Santa Barbara Pride Station at Plaza "gay" la Guerra where citizens could not only register but also mail their own "I Got OUT in SB" postcards with genuine G A Y stamps...really! If you didn't get a chance to see this OUTstanding postcard, designed by Tamara Schuit, visit http://www.GaySantaBarbara.org/press.htm for a low-resolution version and check back for an electronic version that you can e-mail to friends throughOUT the year!

7. Pride Week Wrap-Up

Police estimated this year's crowd exceeded 5,000 persons, nearly doubling last year's turnout. More than 60 vendors/exhibitors from as far away as Washington DC and New Jersey offered a variety of information, services and products from human rights to travel. Of course there were quite a few local gay and gay-supportive community groups including the Great OUTdoors, Gay Straight Alliance Network, several groups from UCSB and of course, lots of Pride vendors.

  • Santa Barbara City Council voted unanimously to approve a $5,000 grant for SB Pride 2002.
  • Gay Identity II - This year's juried art exhibit and the Art Bar reception at Frameworks gallery was a resounding success. Participate in 2003, send an e-mail to: Art@SBPride.org.
  • Governor Gray Davis sent a special representative to Santa Barbara Pride with a commendation recognizing GSB's efforts.
  • Literary Salon - Our first effort of this type for any Santa Barbara event was a resounding success. Several well-known authors and poets had a standing room only crowd in the historic Casa de la Guerra. Participate in 2003, send an e-mail to: OUTwrite@SBPride.org.
  • Gearheads - SB Pride's own car and motorcycle exhibit again came to de la Guerra Street continues to build. Participate in 2003, send an e-mail to: Gearheads@SBPride.org.
  • Community Partners - Community organizations made up nearly half of the exhibitor booths and tables at SB pride 2002. Are you involved with a community organization whose message is a fit with our event but didn't participate this year? We did our best to invite as many groups as possible but if we missed you... Participate in 2003, send an e-mail to: Exhibit@SBPride.org.

Main Stage Performers from all over California contributed their talents to keep the crowds entertained. Special thanks to: The Antara & Delilah Band, Teresa Russell, Endever, it's me Margaret, Danielle Lo Presti and The Masses, Jariya, Crème de la Femme, Sacha Sacket. Be sure to show YOUR support by visiting their websites and purchasing their CDs. There were also a host of drag performers including Cassandra, Ethylina Canne, Buffy, Lady Love and of course local favorites, The Disposable Boy Toys.

The biggest surprise of the day came when lesbian comedienne extraordinaire Sabrina Matthews took the stage and made a surprise guest appearance. Who will it be next year? Visit http://www.gaysantabarbara.org/pride2002.htm to read more about the performers and click through to their web sites. Santa Barbara Pride 2003 is sooner than you think. Be sure to visit us often for the latest details.

But least we forget, without the scores of selfless volunteers at Team GSB who put in countless hours throughout the year to help make this all possible, it couldn't have happened at all. Thank you again!

Sadly, Pride Week finished on a low note of sorts when we were informed that one of our 4' x 6' "Gay SB Festival - Next Exit" signs had been stolen from the freeway on Sunday evening. The invoice to replace the sign exceeds $400 (making it Grand Theft) and places a serious financial burden on GSB. We would much rather pay a reward for the sign's safe return than purchase a new one so if anyone has any information regarding it's whereabouts, please let us know.

How is this all possible?

GSB is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) public benefit organization. Were it not for the generosity of our community members, both individuals and businesses, with volunteer hours and financial contributions, Santa Barbara Pride would not be taking place at all nor would GSB be able to continue with our ongoing cultural programs.

Please be sure to let our sponsors know how much you appreciate their support with YOUR support - throughout the year. Visit our website for our list of sponsors, frequent their websites and their establishments and let them know how important their support is to our community. If you are able to make a contribution to GSB of any amount (tax-deductible within current IRS guidelines) or volunteer your time, your support will go a long way towards sustaining our community building efforts. E-mail: Donate@GaySB.org or E-mail: Volunteer@GaySB.org.

Planning for Santa Barbara Pride 2003 is already well under way. This year's festival date also coincides with National Coming OUT Day on Saturday, October 11th - kind of like a Blue Moon - and we've made lots special plans to focus on such an important coincidence. Mayor Blum has once again agreed to join us and the list of special guests continues to grow. Check our website http://www.GaySantaBarbara.org for up-to-the-minute details, information on how to volunteer and of course, another year's worth of OUTstanding cultural events!

Cheers!
