Bursting With Pride!

The Chromatic Gate
is a monumental painted steel sculpture (21 feet high, 12 1/2 tons) from a design by Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), last living master of the Bauhaus and a local resident for many years. Erected in 1991 in a Santa Barbara city park on Cabrillo Boulevard, it is a memorial to both Herbert and Joella Bayer. The late Paul Mills, 1st Vice-President and founding director of the GSB Foundation spearheaded the effort to erect this monument.
